Honestly, as much as I love Albert, the fic’s characterization of Elsa, Kristoff, and Anna is also spot-on. Because it’s set very shortly after the film’s finale, it feels like a natural extension of the canon personalities and how they might have logically progressed from that point forward. So you have Elsa still very anxious and uncomfortable and trying to learn how to be queen, how to trust people, AND mend her relationship with her sister, Anna being an adorable goof with her big sister and trying to overcome her jitters in her burgeoning relationship with Kristoff due to her experiences with Hans, and Kristoff slowly learning just how much he cares about Anna and learning how to open up and really fully experience loving another person.
It has, honestly, some of the best canon characterization I’ve seen, and I don’t say that lightly. Elsa is incredibly unsure and nervous, Anna is enthusiastic but with that underlying thread of self-doubt that’s crucial to her character, and Kristoff is gruff but protective and loving. Albert is, more than anything else, a catalyst for Elsa’s character development, in learning how to be more sure of herself, how to trust people after shutting everyone out for so many years. Yes, he’s adorably awkward and very sweet, so we love him, but make no mistake, this story is about the canon characters, and it really does read in every respect like a true sequel to the source material.
Hope that gives you a bit more confidence in the story. Believe me, if you’ve been around my blog you know I’m a total stickler when it comes to characterization, and I wouldn’t be so over the moon about the fic if it didn’t do justice to the characters we know and love.
(…really hope all of that made some kind of sense, this fever is really killing my ability to be coherent today.)
Just gonna reblog this before I go to bed in case anyone else is debating whether or not to read SoIaS.
Because you really, really should read SoIaS.
I promised I’d leave reviews for miss-wendybird because I left her a cheap review on the last chapter (on an account I’ve abandoned) and I honestly feel she deserves more. Plus, a good re-read! Who doesn’t like that, right?
I agree with everything bri-ecrit said; SoIaS has probably the best characterization of the ‘fics I have read so far in the fandom. Granted, that’s not a ton because I’m new to it all, but I was impressed with everyone she wrote, including Olaf. (And trust me, that’s sayin’ something!)
The appeal of Albert is really his role within the story. Because he’s related to Hans, he plays a really unique part.
Trust Bri (and me!) when she says that the ‘fic isn’t popular just because of Albert. Albert is a wonderful OC, and considering I hate OCs with a burning, fiery passion from the depths of hell, I really mean it when I say he’s a good OC! He’s well-developed and a part of the plot but not central to it. The story doesn’t revolve around him. That’s another reason why people like him, I think!
Anyway, the story is interesting and it’s told in a way that keeps you reading if you start at the beginning, because you honestly feel like you’re reading about the characters in Frozen. You’re not reading characters shoehorned into roles to play the part the author wants them to play for the sake of telling a story—you are reading about Frozen’s Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, Olaf, Sven, and so on.
A truly enjoyable story. (There are tense issues in the first few chapters but if you let yourself ignore those for a chapter or two, you’ll notice the characterization; it is just so amazing that you’ll forget there are tense problems within the story. Easily. :D
(I hope this doesn’t make me sound like a nutter.)
yoU GUYS I DON’T DESERVE THIS OMG
I agree with all the above reviews. I read it purely because of the hype but it TOTALLY lives up to expectations. The Anna and Kristoff story is just… gah no words!! (Oh the feels). I’m addicted.
